Emerging talent VJDAMUSICMAN encapsulates the intricacies of belonging and
representation on his new album Chaos On A Canvas, showcasing a rich blend of R&B
vocals and cinematic synths that sets him up as a queer South Asian icon in the making.
Helmed by punchy lead single “UGLIES,” featuring aggressive but vulnerable rap tinged with
traditional Tamil kuthu to take us through the highs and lows that Indian-Americans face as
they learn to embrace their identity with pride.
Rooted in confidence and pride for culture and identity, the track is accompanied by vibrant
visuals showcasing one of India’s richest storytelling dance forms Bharatanatyam as the
highly relatable message on celebrating ourselves through the powerful mediums of dance
and music.
Brilliantly colourful in sonics and visuals which showcases dancers dressed in Indian
garments backdropped by colonial architecture, the track is anthemic yet woven with
touches of introspection as it laments on how no matter how hard we try to assimilate, we
will always be seen as “others.”
Having honed a genre-bending pop signature shining with grassroots feel, VJDAMUSICMAN
is a force to be reckoned with.
